In the ICON AND STATE OF MND of the week, we are honoring and celebrating the inspirational Maya Angelou who passed quietly in her home few days ago. She was 86 years old.
An acclaimed American poet, storyteller, activist, and autobiographer. Angelou has had a broad career as a singer, dancer, actress, composer, and Hollywood’s first female black director, but is most famous as a writer, editor, essayist, playwright, and poet. In 2013 she was the recipient of the Literarian Award, an honorary National Book Award for contributions to the literary community.
Here are more amazing quotes from Maya Angelou:
“Bitterness is like cancer. It eats upon the host. But anger is like fire. It burns it all clean.”
“I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back.”
“One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.”
“The poetry you read has been written for you, each of you – black, white, Hispanic, man, woman, gay, straight.”
“I’m working at trying to be a Christian, and that’s serious business. It’s like trying to be a good Jew, a good Muslim, a good Buddhist, a good Shintoist, a good Zoroastrian, a good friend, a good lover, a good mother, a good buddy – it’s serious business.”
A warrior for equality, tolerance, love and peace. Maja Angelou is a true Inspirational Human Being and will always be remembered. R.I.P
